Information
AMMONAPS, known generically as sodium phenylbutyrate, is a medication primarily used in the treatment of urea cycle disorders (UCDs), which are genetic conditions that lead to the accumulation of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia, a toxic byproduct of protein metabolism, can cause serious health issues, including brain damage, coma, and even death if not properly managed. AMMONAPS works by providing an alternative pathway for the removal of nitrogen, a component of ammonia, by converting it into phenylacetyl-CoA, which is then excreted from the body. This process helps to reduce the levels of ammonia in the blood. It is available in tablet and powder forms and is usually prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes dietary restrictions and, in some cases, other medications.
