Information
Cholestagel, known generically as colesevelam, is a medication primarily used to treat high cholesterol levels in individuals who cannot control their cholesterol through diet and exercise alone. It belongs to a class of drugs known as bile acid sequestrants. Cholestagel works by binding to bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. This process forces the liver to use more cholesterol to produce bile acids, thereby lowering the levels of cholesterol in the blood. It is often prescribed in conjunction with other cholesterol-lowering medications to enhance its effectiveness. Cholestagel comes in tablet form and is taken orally, usually once or twice a day, as directed by a healthcare provider.
