Information
Colestid, generically known as Colestipol, is a medication primarily used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs known as bile acid-binding resins. Colestid works by binding to bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. Since bile acids are made from cholesterol, the liver uses up more cholesterol to make more bile acids, thereby lowering the levels of cholesterol in the blood. This mechanism helps in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke associated with high cholesterol levels. Colestid is often prescribed in conjunction with diet and lifestyle changes to achieve optimal results. It is available in tablet and granule forms and is usually taken once or twice a day.
