Information
Daraprim, known generically as pyrimethamine, is an antiparasitic medication primarily used to treat and prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Additionally, Daraprim is used in combination with other medications to treat toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, which can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS. Pyrimethamine works by inhibiting the reproduction of the parasites, thereby helping to control the infection. Despite its effectiveness, Daraprim's availability and cost have been subjects of controversy, especially after significant price increases in some markets.
