Information
EVISTA, generically known as raloxifene, is a medication primarily prescribed for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), which mimic the effects of estrogen on certain tissues in the body, such as bones, helping to increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. Unlike estrogen, however, EVISTA does not stimulate the lining of the uterus and is therefore associated with a lower risk of uterine cancer. In addition to its bone-protective effects, EVISTA is also approved for reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are at high risk or have osteoporosis. It works by blocking estrogen receptors in breast tissue, which can help prevent the growth of certain types of breast tumors that require estrogen to grow. Despite its benefits, EVISTA may not be suitable for everyone and can cause side effects such as hot flashes, leg cramps, and an increased risk of blood clots. It is important for patients to discuss their medical history and potential risks with their healthcare provider before starting treatment with EVISTA.
