Information
Gedarel is a type of hormonal contraceptive commonly referred to as the combined oral contraceptive pill or simply 'the pill'. It contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and desogestrel, which are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, respectively. Gedarel works by preventing ovulation, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg, and altering the lining of the uterus to reduce the likelihood of implantation. It is typically taken once daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day break during which a withdrawal bleed occurs, mimicking the natural menstrual cycle. Gedarel is prescribed not only for birth control but also to manage menstrual-related issues such as heavy periods, painful menstruation, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Like all medications, it may have side effects and is not suitable for everyone, so a healthcare provider's guidance is essential before starting the medication.
