Information
GLIADEL is a chemotherapeutic implant used in the treatment of brain tumors, specifically for malignant glioma. It is a small, biodegradable wafer that contains the active drug carmustine (BCNU), which belongs to the class of alkylating agents. GLIADEL wafers are surgically implanted directly into the brain after the removal of a brain tumor, allowing for localized delivery of the chemotherapy directly to the site where it is most needed. This method of delivery helps to concentrate the drug at the target site while minimizing exposure to the rest of the body, thereby reducing systemic side effects. GLIADEL is used as an adjunct to surgery and radiation in the management of certain types of brain cancers, offering a targeted approach to therapy that can improve outcomes for some patients.
