Information
Hexvix, also known by its generic name hexaminolevulinate, is a photosensitizing agent used in the detection of bladder cancer. It is specifically designed for use in a diagnostic procedure called photodynamic diagnosis (PDD). During this procedure, Hexvix is instilled into the bladder where it accumulates preferentially in cancerous cells. When illuminated with blue light during cystoscopy, the areas with cancerous cells fluoresce in pink-red colors, contrasting against the normal tissue, thus allowing for easier identification and more accurate localization of bladder tumors. This enhanced visualization aids in the thorough examination of the bladder, improving the detection of both visible and less apparent non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) lesions. Hexvix is used in conjunction with standard white light cystoscopy and is particularly useful in identifying carcinoma in situ (CIS), a flat, high-grade cancer that can be difficult to detect with conventional cystoscopy alone.
