Information
Kyleena is a type of intrauterine device (IUD) that is used for long-term birth control. It is a small, T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. Kyleena releases a low dose of levonorgestrel, a form of progestin hormone, directly into the uterus. This action helps to prevent pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus to block sperm, inhibiting sperm from reaching or fertilizing an egg, and thinning the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. Kyleena is effective for up to 5 years after insertion, offering a convenient and reversible form of contraception for women. It is suitable for women of all ages, including those who have not had children.
