Information
Lanoxin, known generically as digoxin, is a medication primarily used in the treatment of various heart conditions, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and sometimes heart failure that cannot be controlled by other medication. It belongs to a class of drugs known as cardiac glycosides, which work by increasing the force of heart muscle contractions and regulating heart rate. This action helps to improve blood circulation and reduce symptoms associated with heart failure, such as shortness of breath and swelling in the legs. Lanoxin is derived from the leaves of a plant called Digitalis lanata. It is available in tablet, capsule, and injectable forms. Despite its benefits, it requires careful dosing and monitoring due to its narrow therapeutic index and potential for toxicity, especially in the elderly or those with kidney impairment.
