Information
Lariam, known generically as mefloquine, is a medication primarily used for the prevention and treatment of malaria, a disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Mefloquine belongs to the quinoline family of medications and works by killing the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells or inhibiting their growth. It is particularly effective against strains of malaria that are resistant to other medications. Lariam is recommended for travelers to areas where malaria is known to be resistant to chloroquine, another antimalarial drug. However, due to its potential for causing serious side effects, including neuropsychiatric adverse effects, its use is generally reserved for situations where other, less toxic drugs are either ineffective or not advised.
