Lixiana, known generically as edoxaban, is an oral anticoagulant medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as direct factor Xa inhibitors. It is primarily used for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, as well as for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). By directly inhibiting factor Xa, an essential component in the blood clotting process, Lixiana effectively reduces the risk of clot formation without the need for routine blood monitoring, offering a significant advantage over older anticoagulants.
