Lumigan, generically known as bimatoprost, is a prescription medication primarily used in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It belongs to a class of drugs known as prostaglandin analogs. Lumigan works by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eyes, which helps to lower the pressure inside the eye. This reduction in intraocular pressure can prevent the progression of glaucoma and the potential risk of vision loss associated with this condition. Lumigan is administered as an eye drop, typically once daily in the affected eye(s). Like all medications, it may have side effects, including eye redness, growth of eyelashes, and itchy eyes, but it is well-tolerated by most patients. Lumigan has also found an off-label use in enhancing eyelash growth, leading to its popularity for cosmetic purposes as well.
