Information
Mifegyne, also known as mifepristone, is a medication primarily used in the management of early pregnancy termination and in some cases for the induction of labor in fetal death cases. It functions by blocking the action of progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancy to continue. Mifegyne is often used in combination with another medication, misoprostol, to enhance its effectiveness in ending a pregnancy. It is administered orally and is considered a safe and effective option for medical abortion up to a certain point in the gestational period, usually up to the first 10 weeks. Mifegyne may also be used for other medical conditions as prescribed by a healthcare provider, such as the treatment of high blood sugar levels in patients with Cushing's syndrome, a condition where the body produces too much cortisol.
