Mydrilate, known generically as Cyclopentolate, is a medication primarily used in ophthalmology to dilate the pupil and temporarily paralyze the accommodation reflex. This anticholinergic drug works by blocking the responses of certain nerve fibers in the eye, leading to muscle relaxation. It is commonly administered as eye drops and is utilized during eye examinations to allow the ophthalmologist to better view the inside of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. Mydrilate can also be used before or after eye surgery to help with diagnosis or treatment. The effects of the drug can last for several hours, during which patients may experience blurred vision and sensitivity to light, making it advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until the effects have worn off.
