Information
OLBETAM, also known by its generic name acipimox, is a lipid-lowering medication primarily used to treat hyperlipidemia, a condition characterized by elevated levels of lipids or fats in the blood. It belongs to the class of drugs known as nicotinic acid derivatives, which work by inhibiting the breakdown of fats in adipose tissue, thereby reducing the levels of fatty acids in the blood. This reduction in fatty acids subsequently decreases the liver's production of triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), which helps to lower the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. OLBETAM is often prescribed when diet, exercise, and weight loss have not been sufficient to lower lipid levels, and it can be used alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering treatments.
