Information
PRIALT (ziconotide) is a non-opioid analgesic medication used for the management of severe chronic pain in adults who require intrathecal therapy (directly into the spinal fluid) and who have not responded to or cannot tolerate other treatments. It is a synthetic version of a peptide originally found in the venom of the marine cone snail. PRIALT works by blocking calcium channels on nerve cells in the spinal cord, which helps to reduce the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Due to its potent effects and the complexity of its administration, PRIALT is typically considered a treatment option after other pain management strategies have failed. It is administered through an infusion pump that delivers the medication directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, requiring careful monitoring by healthcare professionals.
