Information
Pro-Banthine, generically known as Propantheline Bromide, is a medication primarily used in the treatment of peptic ulcers and to reduce excessive saliva and sweat production. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics, which work by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in the transmission of nerve impulses. By inhibiting acetylcholine, Pro-Banthine reduces stomach acid secretion and slows down intestinal movements, providing relief from ulcer pain and aiding in the healing process. Additionally, its anticholinergic properties make it effective in managing conditions associated with overactive sweat and salivary glands. However, due to its mechanism of action, Pro-Banthine may also cause side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and difficulty urinating, which are common to anticholinergic medications.
