Information
Questran, known generically as cholestyramine, is a medication primarily used to lower high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It belongs to a class of drugs known as bile acid-binding resins or sequestrants. Questran works by binding to bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. Since bile acids are made from cholesterol, the liver uses up more cholesterol to make more bile acids, thereby lowering the cholesterol levels in the blood. This medication is often prescribed when diet and lifestyle changes are not enough to reduce cholesterol levels. It may also be used to treat itching caused by a blockage in the bile ducts of the gallbladder. Questran is typically administered in a powder form that must be mixed with water or another liquid before taking it.
