SABRIL, known generically as vigabatrin, is a prescription medication primarily used in the treatment of epilepsy. It is specifically indicated for use in patients with refractory complex partial seizures who have not responded adequately to several alternative treatments, and it is also used for infantile spasms in children. SABRIL works by inhibiting the breakdown of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, thereby increasing the level of this neurotransmitter which is involved in reducing neuronal excitability. This action helps in controlling seizures. However, its use is associated with serious side effects, including the risk of permanent vision loss, and therefore its use is restricted to those who have not responded to other treatments and is subject to a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program to monitor its safety.
