Information
Stribild is a prescription medication used in the treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 25 kilograms. It is a combination antiretroviral medication that contains four active ingredients: elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Elvitegravir works by inhibiting the HIV integrase enzyme, preventing the viral DNA from integrating into the host cell genome, which is a critical step in the viral replication cycle. Cobicistat is included as a pharmacokinetic enhancer to increase the effectiveness of elvitegravir. Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate are both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block another enzyme HIV needs to replicate. Stribild is taken as a single tablet once daily, and it is important for it to be taken consistently for optimal effectiveness. It is not a cure for HIV or AIDS but is used to manage the virus, helping to reduce the viral load to undetectable levels and maintain the immune system's function.
