Information
Tygacil, generically known as tigecycline, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of antibiotics known as glycylcyclines, which are related to tetracyclines. Tygacil is particularly effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those resistant to other antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). It is administered intravenously and is often used as a last-resort medication for complex, difficult-to-treat infections when other antibiotics are ineffective. Tygacil works by inhibiting the protein synthesis of bacteria, thereby stopping their growth and multiplication. Despite its effectiveness, it is important to use this medication judiciously to avoid the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
