Information
Xifaxan, often marketed under the brand name Xifaxanta in some regions, is an antibiotic medication primarily used to treat certain gastrointestinal infections, such as traveler's diarrhea caused by E. coli bacteria, and to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, a brain disorder that can result from severe liver disease. Its active ingredient is rifaximin, which works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the intestines. Unlike many other antibiotics, Xifaxan is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut, allowing it to target intestinal infections directly with reduced systemic side effects. It is also used in the management of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults. Xifaxan is typically administered in tablet form and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional to ensure its appropriate use and effectiveness.
