Information
Zaponex, commonly known by its generic name clozapine, is an antipsychotic medication primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia in patients who have not responded to other medications. It is particularly effective for reducing the risk of recurrent suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Unlike other antipsychotic drugs, Zaponex has a unique mechanism of action that targets several neurotransmitter receptors in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin receptors, which helps in managing symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations, delusions, and thought disorders. Due to its potential side effects, including a risk of agranulocytosis (a serious decrease in the number of white blood cells), its use is monitored through a patient registry that requires regular blood tests to ensure the safety of the patient.
